Looking Back on LIS 724

As this integrating technology course is wrapping up I want to think back to my first blog post. I discussed the positive and negative feelings I have toward technology and I still feel that way! While technology is such an important part of my work life, I don't know if the same can be said about my personal life! Social media is something that I struggle with and I have gotten better. I think that my original GIF is still very much the same now as it was 8 weeks ago!

Educational Technology

I do think that there are a few educational technology tools that I did learn about or use during this course that I could see myself using in my future library classroom and even professionally on my own. I quite enjoyed writing this blog for example and would love to continue doing so. I also did enjoy creating a portfolio website for this class, so I will be mindful to have any potential professional blog be with a site that will easily integrate with the website program I use for my future ePortfolio. I love the idea of having a little "database of me" available for any future employers or to show how much I have grown or changed throughout my career.

Something that I think stood out to me the most was analyzing how and why I use technology with the digital space map. I think that this could be a great exercise to do with older grades, 6th-12th, to have them analyze how they are using technology and if it is really worth their time. I also want to make sure that I am providing my students plenty of opportunities to actively learn with technology.

While I do feel very comfortable with my use of technology in education, I feel the least confident (and the most worried) about AI. As a future school librarian digital citizenship and navigation is a huge part of the job and I whole-heartedly believe that this will extend to AI. I will be teaching AI literacy, AI citizenship and AI responsibility.

Final Thoughts

I have learned so much throughout all these different thought exercises and projects. I appreciate that I am coming out of this class with different tools and content that I can continue using in my future career. I love that I have organized curated lists of different resources and inspiration for things like Readers' Advisory, Book Displays, New School Librarian ideas, and how to create A Love of Reading in my future library classroom and school. I definitely see myself keeping a professional website, keeping up with my PLN that I have started establishing and even keeping a professional blog.

Welcome to the Caskey Catalog!

Let’s get acquainted! Image source: author           My name is Abi Caskey and I currently wear many hats in my day to day life. I currently work at a public library in the Chicago suburbs as a youth services associate and I am also a paraprofessional for 5th grade at a public elementary school. On top of all of that I am also a graduate student at Dominican University working on my Master’s of Library and Information Science (MLIS) and I’m in the School Library Media Program (SLMP) to get my school librarian endorsement. So needless to say, I am exceptionally busy! I am an avid reader, coffee drinker, auntie to 14 nieces and nephews and I have a special love of darkroom photography. I also run and eat broccoli - but only because they’re good for me, not for joy. (Seriously, every running enthusiast insists that I’ll eventually LOVE running and quite frankly, I don’t believe any of you.) Technology: Personal Positives and Negatives Image source: tenor ...

Active Learning

If you work in education, you likely know that active learning is the best way to get your students actively involved in their learning. If you don't here is a great explanation for active learning from   Teaching and Learning in Higher Education ; "Active learning is an approach to instruction that involves actively engaging students with the course material through discussions, problem solving, case studies, role plays and other methods. Active learning approaches place a greater degree of responsibility on the learner than passive approaches such as lectures, but instructor guidance is still crucial in the active learning classroom. Active learning activities may range in length from a couple of minutes to whole class sessions or may take place over multiple class sessions". Active learning is along the same lines as project-based learning but not every school has the ability to jump right into project-based learning. Basically, actively learning means that the more in...

Technology Frameworks in the Classroom

In the modern classroom technology incorporation is incredibly important. While we are giving instruction in math, science, writing and so on, we are also teaching technology literacy. It is important that we are integrating as much technology as we can and when it makes sense. This allows students the ability to practice things like typing skills, navigating and creating digital documents, slide shows, videos and more. It makes me wonder, how well am I integrating technology in my own lessons? What is SAMR?         Before I begin the evaluation, let's talk about the SAMR framework. SAMR stands for s ubstitution, a ugmentation, m odification and r edefinition. The SAMR framework can be described as a staircase, ladder or even a pool with a shallow and deep end, but many resources suggest thinking of it more as a spectrum. Substitution and augmentation are forms of enhancing the learning, while modification and redefinition are forms of transforming the lear...
